The council comedy hour!

There was something in the water — not fluoride, though — Thursday morning as several council members gathered for the legislative governance task force. There are no recording cameras in the 4th floor Old City Hall meeting room, and the only non-city employee in attendance was your faithful Hall Monitor.

As they discussed a proposed council ethics policy and whether to rename the Whistleblower Policy the Waste and Wrongdoing Policy (decision: no), Mayor Naheed Nenshi and Co. were in a fairly cheeky mood.

John Mar, Ward 8: “What about the arrogance and entitlement policy?”

Nenshi: “Oh, you mean the (John) Mar policy.”

———–

Andre Chabot, Ward 10: (discussing the policy clause to “treat others equitably and fairly at all times) “Some people deserve to be treated badly.”

Nenshi: “Feel free to treat people badly.”

———-

Mar: (discussing policy clause that council members and their family shall not accept gifts that could influence the council members) “My child can be bribed with a cookie.”

Gord Lowe, Ward 2: “You can be bribed with a cookie.”

———–

Nenshi: (talking about bad behaviour during council meetings, refers to “salty language” used by Brian Pincott)

Brian Pincott, Ward 11: “I use double entendres. It’s not my fault you take them the wrong way.”
